One man is dead following a late-December shooting in Tecolote and police are still searching for the man’s brother-in-law who is accused of pulling the trigger.

Police obtained a warrant and searched Nicholls’ Tecolote home and seized 32 firearms. An NMSP officer filed a petition for a protection order in Las Vegas District Court on Dec. 23 asking the court’s permission to keep the firearms seized from Nicholls’ home away from him, citing that he posed “a significant danger of causing imminent personal injury” to himself or others.

NMSP’s request was made under the state’s Extreme Risk Firearm Protection Order Act, commonly known as a red flag law. Under the act, law enforcement can temporarily suspend access to firearms for those deemed a threat to themselves or others.
